Over the past 10 months, the Center for Labor Market Studies of Northeastern University has been engaged in a comprehensive array of research and information gathering activities on the operations and outcomes of the three WIA One Stop Career Centers located in the Metro South/West WIA service delivery area. Below is a summary of today's successful attempt to provide necessary services to the public on St. Thomas without electricity and the use of our office faciities.
 
Due to the loss of power to the building, tents were set up in the rear parking area and basic services were provided to the public.  Permission was granted by Asst Commissioner Smith of Housing Parks and Recreation for DOL staff to park in GERS parking lot free of charge for the day which allowed space for the public to park in DOL parking area.

UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE: 16 employees of the UI division reported to work.

  • 14 Intake forms were completed
  • 44 Regular Certifications
  • 41 EUC Certifications
  • 6 Initial Certifications
  • 1 Employee Separation
  • 2 Eligibility Questionnaires completed
  • Approximately 108 Customers were served

Workforce Development Unit: 17 employees reported for work

  • 16 job Seraches were completed ( 2 new customers to the One Stop and one veteran)
  • 8 Scholarship Determinations/ITA
  • 15 - Summer Checks
  • 4 signed in for LAbor Relations (2 employees for Labor Relations were present)
  • 5 signed in for Unemployment  (referred)

  Approximately 50 customers served
 
Worker's Compensation: 11 employees reported to work ( with the exception of L. Farrington - dental surgery)

  • 18 Claimants were served as follows:

                  6 - New Claimants
                  7 - Authorizations
                  3 - Information requests
                  2 -  Drop Offs

  • Dr. Bacot's office was given verbal authorization for 6 injured workers

Business Service Unit - Rapid response meeting with HERVE Restaurant
DOL Attendees: J. Commissiong, K. Harley , and Barbara Wheatley
 

  • 11 attendees received information and BRI, completed their application for UI benefits and for the Workforce Development Unit.  four employees were absent and advise to visit the office at their earliest convenience.
  • 7 new hires registered from Glacial Energy.
