JOYCE SOARES I would like to share a success story of one of Massachusetts State SCSEP ARRA participants. Joyce Soares has worked in sales and marketing her entire working life prior to being laid off in May 2008. She then decided to switch careers to office work. After successfully completing a computer training program offered through the MA Dept. of Workforce Development, her focus was to attain a job in an office setting. One Catch! Her qualifications were real, but the work experience did not reflect the office work experience that would get her noticed by prospective employers. She learned about the SCSEP Program when at a job fair in the fall of 2009. She gladly signed on in order to build confidence in office work and ultimately find full-time permanent employment. Her SCSEP assignment was with the Buzzards Bay Area Habitat for Humanity, one of the “green Host Agencies”. There she was able to put her new-found computer and office training to use by creating a Power Point presentation, doing MS Word documents, entering data into their volunteer data base, even writing a press release for local media publication. She received a lot of guidance and additional training from the manager/mentor who helped her work with Excel spreadsheets. With a newly added Office Administration work experience to her resume Ms. Soares continued to look for a full-time job. She applied and was recently hired as a full-time Administrative Assistant at NATCO/Reinhart Food Service, Inc. in New Bedford, MA “Thank you for giving me the opportunity to use my newest computer and office skills in the workplace through the SCSEP Program. I’d recommend the program to any senior seeking employment. While serving their communities, they will obtain valuable work experience and make meaningful business contacts at the same time,” said Ms. Soares to our program staff in her exit letter.
